The Lost Princess

Prologue

"Mama! Papa!" little eleven-year-old Lucy cried. "where are you? I'm scared!" she cried, tears streaming down her face.

She watched in horror as her palace and hometown burned to the ground, and as people fell left and right, their blood staining the earth.

She had been running with her older brother, younger sister, and parents through the castle, loyal servants helping them to escape, but cruelly cut down after them for delaying their pursuers.
The knights came from Igshid, Hargeon, and Hecay. Three neighboring kingdoms who didn't agree with The king that ruled over them and decided to overthrow the Salancia kingdom.

Lucy had already watched her 15-year-old brother David get crushed by a book shelve and a burning plank. She was now surrounded by a burning wall of fire, holding her dear sister, Macy, age seven, close, and a dagger in her hand her brother had slipped her.

"Run Lucy! As far and as fast as you can! protect your sister no matter what. The VanHalen’s name must live on! within you! when the time comes you'll do what's right! you'll correct the things I couldn't! Now go!" Jude VanHalen, the proud king, yelled to his daughters.

"No daddy! I'm scared! I need you! We're a family." Lucy said, tears falling, but keeping her composure the best she could. Macy was wailing.

Then they heard a bloodcurdling scream and they knew, their dear mother, the queen, had passed on.
"GO!!" Jude shouted fiercely and finally the girls picked up their feet and started running, their long, stunning and tailored dresses occasionally tripping them up.

They ran all they could, up and down staircases, halls, in and out of rooms, doubling back when they got trapped, hiding when they heard an enemy. They ran till their lungs were on fire and they could run no more, but still, somehow, kept running.

Somewhere along the way a servant stopped them. His name was Sigmund, He was big, strong, and had a lot of his face covered because he had gotten into a battle when he was a knight for the family.
"Please misses. You must go through the secret tunnels and hurry! Your best chance is if you split up!"

"I will not leave Macy!" Lucy shouted furiously. How could he even think of such a thing?

"I will take Macy and protect her, but believe me, this is your best chance you have to go!"

Reluctantly Lucy let him pick up Macy. Sigmund went into one secret passage while Lucy went into the other.

She still didn't see the point of splitting her and her sister up, but if it kept her safe, then she wasn't asking questions. The passage was all stone and dimly lit, even pitch black at some points.

When she finally exited the tunnel the moon was orange and the sky was full of smoke. She bounded into the forest and she didn't make it far in when she heard a scream off to her left. It was undoubtedly her sister.

Lucy ran in the direction of the scream and as she approached, noticed a light flickering so she slowed down and crept silently closer. She peered around a tree at the clearing where the other passage should have let out. Her sister and their faithful servant Sigmund were surrounded.
They started questioning Sigmund, and then they started arguing and swords were drawn. Simon cut down three men, but a fourth Pierced him through the back and he fell.

Lucy watched in horror as her sister coward in fear, her face matching her own. Macy hugged her stuffed bunny rabbit closer, whimpering and begging them not to hurt her.

"I'm sorry, but the Vanhalen’s have ruined this land with their lies, poisoned the minds of others. Not one can be allowed to live!" the soldier raised his sword, and with one mighty stab, sent it through the little girl. Macy screamed, then dropped, blood soaking her clothes.

Lucy watched her sister die and was taken aback. A gasp escaped her lips and she stepped back, snapping a twig.... drawing the remaining attention of the guards.

"THE ELDEST DAUGHTER! GET HER! SHE MAY NOT LIVE!"

Lucy turned and sprinted, tears rolling down her face and blurring her vision. She tripped over a root and landed on top of a bush. She heard knights shouting and coming closer. Lucy wriggled her body until she was under the bush and hidden from view. She quieted her sobs and held her breath, begging and praying to all she knew that she wouldn't be found. Her father’s words echoed on her mind 'you must live on.'

It felt like hours had gone by to the little girl as guards came back and forth. But each was as oblivious as the last of the little girl hidden in the little berry bush.

As the commotion died down and night grew into dawn, little Lucy climbed from her hiding spot. She picked a few berries, as she recognized them as safe from the old text books she studied from.
And then, even though she was exhausted beyond belief, she ran. She ran hard and fast, and had no idea where she was running to. Three days and two nights she spent in the woods, with no food or water and running the whole time, hoping she would get lucky.

And on the third night, she did.

She found a building, or rather ran into it. It was a house, no rather, a barn. Lucy happily ran inside and filled around. It smelled bad and it was pitch black. She felt a bunch of straw and decided to sleep there for the night, it was a lot warmer than where she had been sleeping the previous nights.
She just hoped she would get a moment of piece and safety, and she finally let it all sink in.

She was all alone.

  4. I think you have a great thing going here. My one word of advice would be to slow down a little-- this is just the prologue, and you've already killed off a bunch of people. Start with a little more exposition to allow readers to get to know your characters and their relationships. This will make the deaths more meaningful and allow us to sympathize with Lucy. Right now, it's a little confusing. Overall, great job!
